| Jay says 'It's Johnson's tattoos I tell you. They distract the English batsmen and get them out. There can't possibly be any other explanation, can there?' You must be kidding Jay, aren't you? |
|
| Ravi Trivedi says The English batsmen have been found wanting against some well directed short bowling from the Aussies.Wonder what's gonna happen when they face this attack on the WACA pitch. This series is surely gonna be exciting. |
|
The Aussies should be a jubiliant bunch and what can one say about Mitchell Johnson. He looks mean, lean, fit and a constant menace. He is putting the fear in the English batsmen's minds. Everyone expected him to be the wrecker-in-chief and going by his show in the match, he looks all set and determined to bring the Urn back to Australia. Whatever Michael Clarke did in this match, it turned to gold and after a long time one could see smiling Aussie faces. It has been a while, I reiterate and they certainly deserve every bit of praise that will come their way after this win. |
So England's proud record in Tests comes to an end. This is a defeat that will sting and inflict a lot of scars mentally on their players. It's a hammering and a right one at that. No-one expected such an outcome before the series started. But this England side have bounced back in the past, whether they will do so in this series remains to be seen. |
Stat 5: First loss for England in Tests since they lost to India at Ahmedabad in 2012. Since then their record: played 13, won 7 and drawn 6. |
Stat 4: First loss for England in Tests this year. Their record before Brisbane 2013 read; played 10, won 5 and drawn 5. |
Stat 3: First Test win for Australia since Michael Hussey retired. It has been a pretty long wait. |
Stat 2: First Ashes win for Australia since Dec 2010 when they won at Perth. Since then their Ashes record has been: lost 5 out of 7 before Brisbane 2013. |
Stat 1: Today's win was Australia's first since they defeated Sri Lanka in January 2013. So only their 1st win after 9 Test matches. They lost 0-4 to India and 0-3 to England after the win against the Lankans. |
So that's a wrap of all the best tweets. Unfortunately we cannot bring you the presentation as the broadcaster here has decided to pull the plug. It's a shame really. But we will wrap the coverage up with a couple of nice stats and a few user comments. Here are the stats coming up. Meanwhile,Mitch Johnson has been named the Man of the Match for his fiery bowling. His match figures: 9-103. |
Michael Vaughan puts it perfectly in this tweet: 'Aussies have outclassed,Out fought and certainly out paced the England side this week...' |
The ever funny and amazing Dan Liebke tweets this gem: '#Ashes Stat: Australia have won 100% of their home Tests in 2013. England have won a mere 71%.' |
Mohandas Menon tweets: 'Mitchell Johnson 4th Aussie to score 100 runs & claim 8 wkts in the same #Ashes Test. Others G Giffen 1894, A Trott 1895, J Gregory 1920.' |
Simon Hughes tweets: 'That was an astonishingly tame batting performance by England, totally freaked out by Johnson. Worrying.' |
Mohandas Menon tweets: 'Finally an #Ashes Test win for Australia after losing 5 out of 7, since their last win Perth by 267 runs on 19 Dec 2010.' |

Here are a few tweets for you |
Mitchell Johnson seemed invincible, working over the English batsmen with ferocious bouncers. Not even Kevin Pietersen could overcome the steep bounce. He went one better in the second innings claiming a 5-fer to cap match figures of 9-103. The most decisive passage of play ensued after the rain break wherein, England lost 4 wickets for 18 runs and were eventually bowled out for 179 as Australia went 1-0 up in the return Ashes |
Australia produced a domineering batting display in their second innings to put them firmly in the driver's seat. Hundreds from Michael Clarke and David Warner formed the cornerstone of the Aussie onslaught as the hosts declared their innings at 401-7, gaining a whopping lead of 560. |
Match recap: In the build-up to the return Ashes, several had cast doubts over Australia's Test match prowess. They silenced all the critics, setting up a resounding innings victory to annihilate the sorry Poms, who failed to turn-up. Electing to make first use of a good batting surface, Australia made 295 thanks to some impressive rear-guard action from Brad Haddin and Mitchell Johnson, who had an even bigger impact on Australia's win with the ball. The leaner, meaner and fitter Mitch, who peppered the visitors with a volley of short balls, wiped out England for a shameful 136. The only hint of resistance came from Michael Carberry, who top-scored with 40 runs. |
Warner: 'It was fantastic, it was a great spell by Johnson. It is a team game. You have to score as many you can. The credit goes to the bowlers. Everyone put their hand up and we go 1-0 up in the Ashes' |
Haddin: 'It was an extraordinary game. Mitch bowled very well. It was good fun. It will be nice to have a day off. Yes, I was nervous a bit, it is the first match of the summer.' |
The heavens opened up midway through the 60th over to grant the hosts a lengthy rain reprieve. What transpired after resumption was hara-kiri with England losing 4 wickets for 18 runs. Mitchell Johnson was once again the show stealer, terrorizing England with fast bumpers. Nathan Lyon also joined the party, spinning out Cook and Prior. Cook's dismissal triggered off the procession and rain came pouring down but it was only a matter of time before the Aussies annihilated England to go 1-0 in the return Ashes series. They duly completed proceedings after the break. |
Recap of day 4: Alastair Cook and Kevin Pietersen negotiated the first hour safely without any hassles to raise the spirits in the English camp. However soon after the drinks break, Kevin Pietersen, much like Jonathan Trott was suckered into the short-ball trap. Ian Bell joined his skipper and batted positively to stitch together a steady stand worth 58 before the latter perished to Siddle's extra-bounce. |
So Australia have absolutely hammered the English inside 4 days at the Gabba to go 1-0 up. The crowd go delirious. As soon as Johnson completed the catch, the Aussies rushed up to him with smiles on their faces to congratulate. Amidst all this madness, I have forgotten to mention that wicket of Anderson was Johnson's 9th in the match - a superb performance. He has terrorised and tormented the English all through the game. Now as David Lloyd says, he looks a different animal. |
