World football governing body FIFA at its Executive Committee meeting in Costa do Sauípe – Brazil – decided to grant the hosting rights of the 2017 Under-17 FIFA World Cup to India.
The news of the hosts of the 2017 Under-17 FIFA World Cup has been pending for months with Government of India guarantees missing or necessary changes to regulations and Indian law, then World football governing body FIFA over the last two years has been rolling out the red carpet for India to join the bandwagon of global football by being named as hosts of the 2017 FIFA Under-17 World Cup with an aim to push for the growth of the beautiful game on the Indian subcontinent.
“Yes, India has won the right to host the 2017 Under-17 World Cup Football. It’s official now,” All India Football Federation General Secretary Kushal Das told PTI.
This will the biggest ever football tournament India will be hosting and the first FIFA event in the country’s history.
Being the hosts, India will automatically qualify as one of the participating nation in the tournament, and after their unfortunate absence in 1950 FIFA World Cup even after been invited, this will be their first appearance in a FIFA World Cup of any kind.
The date of the tournament will be decided later. United Arab Emirateshosted the tournament this year while Chile will be the host country for the 2015 edition.
India, whose submission of final bid documents were initially in doubt due to delay in getting government guarantees on various subjects, will need six to eight host cities for the mega event. New Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai, Chennai, Guwahati, Margao, Kochi and Bangalore could be in the running the host the matches.
