Today’s article highlights the top 10 highest runs scored by teams in One Day Cricket. Cricket has evolved over the times to become one of the most popular forms of sport, and this shift has occurred after the introduction of One Day matches. Though it is batsman friendly, scoring high is always challenging given the conditions of the game these days and the ever improving fitness standards of the fielders.
10. India – 401/3 vs. South Africa 2010
This match was significant for more reasons than India’s high total. The match had seen the little master add yet another feather in his cap. His 200* really put tears into everyone’s eyes and led India to victory.
09. New Zealand 402/2 vs. Ireland 2008
This match saw New Zealand maul the Irish at Aberdeen. The star of the show was Brendon McCullum and James Marshall both of whom scored above 160 each.
08. Sri Lanka 411/8 vs. India 2009This match can be termed as one of the most close fought matches of all times. Chasing a humongous Indian total Sri Lanka looked well set courtesy some classy batting by Tillakaratne Dishan and Kumar Sangakkara.
07. India 413/5 vs. Bermuda March 2007The match was like a walk in the park for India. Batting first Ganguly and Sehwag toiled up the Indian innings and then Yuvraj Singh gave it the awesome finish required by a world cup match. Bermuda were nowhere near the target as they surrendered after scoring 156.
06. India 414/7 vs. Sri Lanka 2009The game was very even balanced with India setting this huge total and the Sri Lanka almost chasing it down. India’s first batting was starred by a mammoth VirenderSehwag hundred and then Dhoni’s whirlwind 76.
05. India 418/5 vs. West Indies 2011When Viru gets going no-one can stop him. The West Indians learned it the hard way when he hammerd a 219 of just 149 deliveries. Support for him came from Raina and Gambhir as he smashed the bowling out of the park
04. South Africa 418/5 vs. Zimbabwe 2006This score reflects the awesome capabilities which is possessed by Mark Boucher. It was Boucher’s day as he hit the second fastest century in ODIs. Not content with the high score, he went on to keep and then took 2 catches to rout the Zimbabweans dismally.
03. Australia 434/4 vs. South Africa 2006The Aussies could have held their heads high and walked out with dignity but alas it wasn’t their match. However they did produce a commendable performance by scoring 434 which at that time was the highest total ever in One Day cricket.
02. South Africa 438/9 vs. Asutralia 2006The most heroic chase in the history of One Day cricket saw South Africa chase down Australia’s 434 in one of the most nail biting finishes of all times. If Australia were powered single handedly by Ricky Ponting, South Africa were powered by Gibbs, Smith and Boucher. It was a copybook chase with over 7 South African player having a run-rate over 100.
01. Sri Lanka 443/9 vs. Netherlands 20062006 must be considered as the year of the high scores in Cricket. This time in the month of March Sri Lanka showed the Dutch what batting was all about. The batting show was started by Jayasuriya and then completed by Sangakkara and Dilshan as Sri Lanka put up a gigantic 443.
